My work is in geriatrics rehab, and I see myself there as part personal trainer, part personal coach, and part encourager and comforter. Emotional support and psychological bolstering are an integral part of my job.
The best way I know to improve the world is by continuing to be as responsible for my own health on all levels so that I have the energy to contribute maximally both during my day job, and during my contribution of singing at shabbat services twice a month. I'm also an avid recycler and composter, and usually wear a few layers at home to be comfortable with the thermostat at 68°.
If I were stranded on an island, I'd have my dear dog, green tea, and a few comfortable pillows with me. I'd love to have the company of my best friend from Texas, my aunt, and another old friend from San Francisco. They'd all need to have their partners along, too, which would be fine with me.
One dream place would be a small beach town on the south coast of Spain, but maybe just for a few months in the fall or spring. Any beautiful beach town that is mostly unspoiled, where I can speak the language and eat good, simple food. I love to swim, love the sun and the relaxation it brings, and the less formal way of life by the beach.
I don't know if this is unique or not, but I felt, for the most part, my parents trusted my judgment from early on. I think from that evolved a trust in my own judgment and intuition, not that I don't ever have doubts - of course I do. But I usually trust the unfolding process as the doubts shift into more clarity.
Free time? I like playing with the cats (one inside/outside; the other outside only), dancing, gardening, going to movies, cooking & eating, playing word games socially, e.g., Tabu, watching dvds, reading (mostly on the internet these days), and connecting by phone (remember the phone?) with friends. I try to get to the gym three times a week, too, and I attend shabbat services four times a month, singing in an ensemble for two of those services. I'm not observant, but I love Jewish spiritual community, and I guess I naturally pray while singing.
